How this is calculated
The base model is Naismith's rule, published by Scottish mountaineer William W. Naismith in 1892: allow one hour for every 5 km (3 miles) of distance, plus one hour for every 600 m (2,000 ft) of ascent. It remains the standard first estimate used by mountaineering clubs and search-and-rescue teams worldwide.
We refine it in three ways. Your fitness level sets the horizontal speed (3.2–5.6 km/h) instead of assuming Naismith's brisk Victorian pace. A terrain factor (1.0–1.6×) scales moving time for rough, rocky, or snowy ground, following the corrections popularised in Eric Langmuir's Mountaincraft and Leadership. Finally, break time is added as a percentage of moving time — the method used in professional route cards — because real hikers stop for photos, food, and navigation.
One honest limitation: steep descents are not modelled separately. Langmuir's descent correction needs slope-angle data that manual input can't provide, so downhill is treated as normal distance — accurate for most routes, slightly optimistic for knee-hammering descents.

How accurate is Naismith's rule?
For a reasonably fit hiker on a maintained trail it lands within 10–15% of real-world times. Accuracy drops on technical ground and for groups — that's why this calculator layers terrain and fitness corrections on top of the base rule and lets you dial in break time. Treat the result as a planning floor, not a promise.
Does elevation gain really change hiking time that much?
Yes — it is usually the biggest factor after raw distance. Naismith found that every 600 m (2,000 ft) of climbing costs about a full extra hour regardless of how short the horizontal distance is. A 5-mile hike with 3,000 ft of gain takes roughly as long as a 9-mile flat walk.

Why do I hike slower than the calculator says?
The usual culprits are underestimated break time and pack weight. Photo stops, snack breaks, and navigation checks add up fast — bump the break slider to 20–25% if you like to linger. A heavy pack also drops your base speed by roughly half a fitness level.
Does the estimate account for downhill sections?
Descent is counted as normal walking distance. Research shows gentle descents speed you up while steep ones slow you down, and the two roughly cancel on most loops. On routes dominated by long, steep descents, add 10–15% margin.
