Ask a new hiker how long an 8-mile trail takes and they’ll divide by walking speed: “3 mph, so about 2 hours 40.” Ask an experienced hiker and they’ll answer with a question: “How much climbing?”
That instinct has a number behind it, and it’s older than the light bulb in your headlamp.
The rule: one hour per 2,000 feet
In 1892, Scottish mountaineer William W. Naismith wrote down the planning rule that still carries his name: allow one hour for every 3 miles of distance, plus one hour for every 2,000 ft (600 m) of ascent.
Read that second clause again — the ascent penalty is independent of distance. Climbing 2,000 ft costs you an hour whether it’s spread over six gentle miles or packed into one brutal one.

Same distance. Nearly a two-hour spread. That’s why “how far” is only half a question.
Why climbing costs so much
Walking uphill is quite literally lifting your body — plus your pack — against gravity, over and over. Raise 80 kg of hiker-plus-gear 600 vertical meters and you’ve done roughly 470 kJ of pure lifting work before a single horizontal meter is counted. Your legs pay that bill in speed: on a 10% grade, most hikers slow to half their flat pace without noticing.
Energy tells the same story from the other side: the Pandolf equation — the US Army’s load-carriage model — shows calorie burn roughly doubling when a level walk becomes a 10% climb at the same speed.
When Naismith breaks
The rule assumes a fit walker on decent ground. Real trails bend it in predictable ways:
- Terrain. Talus, scree, and snow slow everything — add 20–60% to moving time (Langmuir’s corrections, which our calculator applies).
- Fitness. Naismith’s 3 mph baseline is brisk. New hikers average closer to 2 mph on mountain trails; conditioned ones hold 3.5+.
- Breaks. Photos, snacks, navigation — real days include 10–25% stopped time that the pure rule ignores.
- Descent. Gentle downhill speeds you up; steep downhill (knees, braking) slows you down. On most loops the two roughly cancel.
