How this is calculated

Conversions use the exact international definitions: 1 mile = 1.609344 km and 1 foot = 0.3048 m. Pace and speed are reciprocal (pace in min/unit = 60 ÷ speed in units/h).

Step length is estimated at 0.414 × body height — the factor used by mainstream pedometer references for natural walking. Step count is simply distance divided by step length; treat it as a planning figure, since terrain and fatigue shorten real strides.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile of hiking?

For most adults, between 2,000 and 2,500 steps on easy ground — the converter personalises this from your height. Expect noticeably more steps per mile on steep or rocky trails, where stride length shortens.

What's the difference between pace and speed?

They are the same information flipped: speed is distance per time (3 mph), pace is time per distance (20 minutes per mile). Hikers and trail runners tend to think in pace; guidebooks and maps quote speed — the converter moves freely between them.

Why do European guidebooks feel "off" to US hikers?

Kilometers are shorter than miles (1 mi = 1.609 km), so a "12 km" day is only 7.5 miles — but meters are bigger than feet (1 m = 3.28 ft), so "800 m of ascent" is a serious 2,600 ft climb. Converting both before judging a route avoids the classic misread.

How accurate is the stride estimate?

The 0.414 × height factor is the standard pedometer approximation and is within a few percent for most people walking naturally on level ground. Measure your own over a known 100 m for better precision — and expect it to shrink on climbs.
