Most hiking calculators multiply your inputs by a mystery constant. Trailomen only uses formulas with a paper trail: Naismith's rule (1892) with Langmuir's terrain corrections for time, the US Army's Pandolf equation (1977) for energy under load, National Park Service hydration guidance for water, the joint NWS / Environment Canada wind-chill standard (2001) for summit safety.
